Zone 2 - Becoming Parents > How It Might Affect Your Relationship

A baby can upset the balance

Having a baby is usually a happy event, but it's also a major milestone for both parents, forcing changes on their lifestyle and their relationship. Each of you may be tested to the limit - adjusting to the new situation can often put a strain on your relationship.

Research shows that many parents feel less satisfied with their relationship after a baby, at least in the short-term. This isn't surprising, since both partners are probably tired, anxious and emotional - and they may be worried about things like money.

Becoming a parent can also trigger a host of memories, some of which can be upsetting. For Louise, it was her fear of being abandoned: "My dad left when my mum had me. I worry that Dave will leave me too".

It may help to try and understand your background experiences and what you expect of each other - feelings we usually keep hidden can affect how we behave in relationships. Understanding each other can help you to be more realistic and prepared for the ups and downs of parenthood.
