What you can do for yourself
Look after yourself
- eat well, rest when you can, exercise if possible, but most
importantly, recognise that things should get easier.
Meet others - Being
with a baby can be lonely and isolating. Try to meet other parents
in the same situation as yourself, who can provide support and
someone to talk to. Your health visitor may know of local groups,
or check out your local community centre, library, NCT group,
church, mosque, temple or synagogue.
The booklet 'Parents
together' is a guide to help parents get together for support
and encouragement.
Try and find time for yourselves
- You and your partner can arrange this between you, or ask a
family member, or set up a mutual arrangement with a friend with
children.
Don't expect too much of yourself
- You, your partner and your family are the most important thing
to care about, especially when the baby is small. Don't worry
about the housework or cooking fancy meals. Most other things
can wait.
Take time to enjoy your baby
- As parents of older children say, the time when your baby is
small will fly by (although it may not seem like it!). It won't
be long before they're off to school or leaving home.
